THE FRENCH waiter who threw an egg at Nicolas Sarkozy is using eggs to raise the €150 he was fined by a court for the act.
Michael Audran is making crepes every night this week at a street festival in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, where he has lived for the past eight years.
One cent from every crepe - in which eggs are a vital ingredient - will go towards the €150 he was ordered to pay to charity by Dublin District Court when he admitted a public order offence as Mr Sarkozy was driven through the gates of Government Buildings on Monday.
If he doesn't sell enough crepes - he would need to make 15,000 - the Brittany native says he will make up the shortfall from his jobs in a local supermarket and as a part-time waiter in a restaurant in nearby Keshcarrigan.
The 35-year-old was unrepentant yesterday over his anti-Sarkozy protest. Mr Audran claimed that after his election President Sarkozy forgot his promises to the underprivileged.
Mr Audran acknowledged that he would not have been treated as leniently in France for his offence.
He told Ocean FM radio: "I wouldn't be here talking about it. I would be in jail right now for two, three, four or five months."
He said he carefully chose his moment to throw the egg as Mr Sarkozy's car reached the entrance to Government Buildings.
He explained: "I said it's now or never and I took my chance. A few people said it struck the car. Others said no. I was going to throw a second egg when five or six guards jumped on me."
