The Electro-Technical Council of Ireland, which represents electrical suppliers, has advised the public to seek the advice of a registered electrical contractor or consulting engineer when installing fuse boxes after indications that many Irish homes have been installed with a substandard fuse unit.
The unit, which is part of an electrical distribution box, has been found to be unsafe in independent tests undertaken after the ETCI notified the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs. ETCI chairman Mr Jerry O'Dwyer said his organisation would do whatever it could to ensure a similar problem did not emerge. "We will liaise closely with the Director of Consumer Affairs to effect prompt action if there are suspicions of inferior or dangerous products on the market."
