Bank holiday revellers have been warned of the increased risk of water-related accidents as forecasters predict fine and warm weather for the bank holiday weekend.

Aquatic enthusiasts should be aware that their bodies are not acclimatised and they should not stay too long in the water

Irish Water Safety (IWS) said an average of 13 drownings happen in Ireland every month but warned: "The fine weather this weekend will entice people to enjoy boating, angling, surfing and walks by waterways nationwide.

"However water temperatures are still cold - at sea approximately 10 degrees, fresh water approximately 8 degrees. IWS cautions aquatic enthusiasts that their bodies are not acclimatised and they should not stay too long in the water."

The group said people should wear a correctly fitted lifejacket or buoyancy aid at all times. Alcohol is said to be a contributory factor in many accidental drownings.
