GlaxoSmithKline said today it is to cease the production of toothpaste at the Stafford-Miller Ireland facility in Dungarvan with the loss of 104 jobs. It is to transfer these operations to its facility in the UK.

The company said the decision was taken after a review of its operations in light of a recent merger between Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham and the acquisition of Block Drug/Stafford-Miller.

The transfer is expected to be completed by the second half of 2002.

Stafford-Miller Ireland's general manager, Mr Peter Kirwan said: "The proposed discontinuation of toothpaste manufacture in the Dungarvan facility will be a disappointment to all Stafford-Miller employees and the resulting loss of jobs is very regrettable."
