Luxury goods group Waterford Wedgwood said today the year had started well and reiterated its intention to double the size of its business in the next five years.

The company said in its annual statement that sales in the year to date were up eight per cent over the same period in 2000, despite the uncertainties of the present economic climate.
"We are extremely confident in our objective to achieve dramatic, profitable growth over the next five years," it said.
The company said it remained committed to a path of aggressive but careful growth through acquisition.
"We will continue to acquire luxury brands that match our existing brands in reputation and quality...We will also drive growth from continuous improvement and internal efficiencies," it said.
Its brand extension programme beyond its traditional crystal and ceramics business had brought in over euro 100 millionin sales from cutlery, jewellery, gourmet foods, linens and soft furnishings.
