Roy Keane has said it may be timeto break up the Manchester United team after last night's Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

United lost 2-1 to Bayern in the Olympic Stadium to complete a 3-1aggregate defeat.

The Reds skipper said: "The players gave their all but we are just not good enough and maybe it's time to move on. Maybe it's the end of the road for this team, I'm not sure."

Keane has a point, according to the Press Association. United have regressed rather than progressed in the two years since they beat Bayern to win the Champions League.

They have become predictable and teams have worked out how to stop them in Europe.

They spluttered throughout this season's campaign and after failing to heed the many warning signs they have paid the price.

United only really began to play against Bayern in the second half and by then the tie was beyond them.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson could not hide his despondency. He felt the defeat had wiped out all the happiness he had felt at winning a third successive Premier League title last Saturday.

He regards Europe as the true barometer of United's season and knows they have failed to live up to the standards he expects.

"This has taken away the joy of winning on Saturday and I think this is disappointing," he said. "We look at the European challenge as the challenge we need to progress as a football team. We've failed and that's adisappointment."

Keane's assessment appears a fair reflection judging by last night's performance and change at Old Trafford could come soon. PA
