Snow and freezing temperatures cut into the day's sporting programme this morning as several  British soccer fixtures were called off.

The Nationwide League First Division game between Sunderland and table-toppers Norwich was the highest-profile victim, snow making the areas around the Stadium of Light unsafe for supporters.

The Second Division lost Chesterfield v Colchester and Tranmere v QPR whilst in the Third Division York v Scunthorpe and Carlisle v Huddersfield were also postponed. Swansea against Rochdale was called off yesterday.

The games at Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol Rovers and Brentford survived pitch inspections but Crewe's encounter with Stoke remained subject to a noon check.

Scottish football was even more severely affected with just three League matches surviving.

There were no postponements in the Scottish Premier League but below the top flight, only the games at East Fife, Gretna and Queens Park remained.

Today's racing at Warwick also fell victim to the elements but the meetings at Haydock and Kempton were to go ahead. There were no doubts about racing on the all-weather track at Lingfield.
