June’s downpours, storms and frost broke long-standing records around the country, Met Éireann said today.
A weather station in the sunny south east had its wettest June day for 50 years while the strongest winds since 1980 hit Dublin.
The unsettled conditions also brought ground frost, hail showers and almost-freezing temperatures.
Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford recorded 54mm of rainfall on June 21st, the wettest since 1958.
Overall, twice the average amount of June rainfall fell in the south and southeast of the country.
"Although June was considered very wet, about twice the rainfall fell in June of last year," said Met Éireann expert Peter Lennon.
Knock Airport also had its wettest June since 1993 with 146mm rainfall.
There were five nights of ground frost in Birr during the first half of the month compared with the average of just one.
The highest gust of the month, 94km/h was recorded at Casement Aerodrome — the biggest wind at the station since 1980.
Temperatures reached their highest (23.9°C) at Claremorris and lowest (1.5°C) at Mullingar.
The highest amount of daily sunshine was 14.9 hours recorded at Dublin Airport on June 20th.
