The Irish Coast Guard has issued a weather warning for the weekend with waves more than 10 metres high and storm force winds forecast for Irish coastal waters.

A spokesman for the Irish Coast Guard said storm force winds are forecast for the southwestern and western coasts and urged the public to heed the warnings and take care.

People are advised to stay away from exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, beaches, promenades or other coastal areas.

"The combination of tides, the forecasted gale warning and high seas conditions and swollen rivers may result in very dangerous conditions on the coast," he said.

Meanwhile the Road Safety Authority (RSA) cautioned road users about gale force winds reching up to 150km per hour and heavy rains.

RSA chief Noel Brett said: "Extreme weather conditions will result in hazardous driving conditions with fallen debris on roads, flooding of roads and reduced driver visibility from heavy rainfall."

"Therefore it is best to avoid making any unnecessary journeys. If driving is unavoidable be extra vigilant, belt up and always expect the unexpected".
