People travelling through the Ballsbridge area can expect to face delays and diversions this evening and tomorrow as two of the big concerts of the summer take place at Lansdowne Road. The American group, REM, play this evening, with the Corrs taking the stage tomorrow night.

Some 50,000 people are expected at the REM concert with up to 40,000 tickets sold for the Corrs show. Gardai will be closing some streets near the ground to traffic on both evenings and motorists are advised to take alternative routes. Exact details of what streets will be closed to cars were not available yesterday.

Meanwhile, Kellystown Road in Rathfarnham will be closed until Monday, September 27th to facilitate the construction of a new motorway bridge. An alternative route is advised along Ticknock Road and Harold's Grange Road.

A new layout of roadworks at the M50/Firhouse junction will affect southbound traffic. Bord Gais work will be in place on Emmet Road, between Tyrconnell Road and Tyrconnell Avenue, until August 10th.

Clonskeagh Road will be reduced to one lane between Eglington Road and the bridge over the Dodder between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This will continue for the next week.

York Street, between Mercer Street and Stephen's Green West, will be closed until July 15th for road construction. Traffic at the junction of York Street and Mercer Street will be diverted via Mercer Street Upper and Cuffe Street.

Work will take place outside peak times on Glasnevin Hill, Mobhi Road at Botanic Avenue, Richmond Road from Drumcondra Road to Philipsburgh Avenue until the end of July and on Drumcondra Road Lower between Binns Bridge and Botanic Avenue.

Waterworks will be in place for four weeks on Martin's Row, Chapelizod, near the junction of the Chapelizod Road. Traffic on Martin's Row will be reduced to one lane for the entire period. Work will take place, outside working hours, on Leeson Street Upper and Lower in relation to a quality bus corridor for the area.

Until December 17th, Stocking Lane in Rathfarnham will be closed at the interface with the proposed route on the Southern Cross Motorway. An alternative route is advised via the Edmonstown Road and the Mount Venus Road. A section of the Blanchardstown Road North will be closed from its junction with Ballycoolin crossroads until August 15th. Works will be carried out on Dorset Street Lower and at the North Circular Road.

The North Circular Road Gate at the Phoenix Park will be closed for three weeks for works on the gate. As a result, delays are likely on Parkgate Street during the peak times. Work will be carried out on the North Circular Road near St Peter's Church. Esat work will be carried out over the next month on Fownes Street Lower, Beresford Place, Cecilia Street and Dame Street.

Cork

The new Lee tunnel has been opened to traffic and now completes Cork city's ring road. It connects the Dublin N8 and Waterford (N25) routes to the east of the city, with the national routes south and west of the city.

Bord Gais works continue on the South Mall. Bridge construction work continues on Lancaster Quay. Traffic and parking will not be allowed on the right-hand side between the junctions with Little Hanover Street and Woods Street. These restrictions will last for the next couple of months.

As part of the Cork main drainage scheme, Bachelors Quay will be closed between Devonshire West and Henry Street until mid-August.

Laois

Resurfacing works take place in Abbeyleix until the end of November 1999. Delays are very bad during weekdays, with hold-ups of up to 45 minutes. The alternative route is to take the Limerick Road after Portlaoise via Mountrath to Derrin Cross. From there you can turn left and travel through Ballacolla and rejoin the N8 at Durrow.

Wexford

Until the end of September, roadworks will cause major disruption on the N25 between Carrigbyrne and Ballinboola in Co Wexford. There is also work on the N25 at Barntown.

Leitrim

Realignment works continue on the N16 Sligo/Enniskillen Road about four miles west of Manorhamilton. Speed restrictions are in operation.

Travel

Major improvement works are taking place on the Sligo rail service. As a result, there are alterations to the timetables until mid-July from Monday until Friday afternoon each week.

Iarnrod Eireann has introduced a Sunday suburban rail service for Drogheda line customers since July 11th. Four trains will operate in each direction, between Pearse Station and Drogheda serving Tara Street, Connolly, Malahide, Donabate, Rush and Lusk, Skerries, Balbriggan and Laytown.
