Iarnrod Eireann is mounting a major transport operation this weekend to cater for up to 150,000 people travelling by rail to a number of events. Sunday will be particularly busy, with the All-Ireland football semi-finals taking place at Croke Park in Dublin and the Trip to Tipp rock festival being held in Thurles.
Extra passengers will also be travelling to Kerry over the weekend for the start of the Rose of Tralee festival.
Four special trains will run on Sunday for Kerry GAA fans, as well as a special from Portadown for Tyrone supporters. A fleet of 10 special trains will run to and from Thurles. Booking is essential for the Trip to Tipp trains.
AA Roadwatch has advised motorists of traffic changes in a number of areas throughout the State. In Dublin, there is severe disruption on St Lawrence's Road in Chapelizod. On Merrion Row, where Telecom is carrying out roadworks, the bus lane remains open to all traffic.
Roadworks are also under way on Ballinteer Road, Merrion Road at Ballsbridge Terrace, George's Street in Dun Laoghaire and on Ballyroan Road in Rathfarnham. Harold's Cross Road in Kimmage will have roadworks for the next 11 weeks, with diversions for out-oftown traffic which will severely affect the evening rush hour.
Due to works on the M50 for the Lucan Interchange, the bus lane is closed eastbound at St Loman's and a contra-flow is in place at Fonthill. In west Dublin, a 40 m.p.h. limit is in place between Newcastle Road and the M50 interchange. All westbound traffic on the Lucan bypass is subject to a contra-flow system between the Deadman's Inn junction and the Fonthill junction.
A section of Main Street, Rathcoole, is closed for about one year, while the Old Naas Road from Main Street, Rathcoole to Beechwood Lawns is temporarily closed.
AA Roadwatch also warns that there are waterworks on Killiney Hill Road for the next 10 weeks, and a section of the road is closed. Brighton Road in Foxrock is open again but there are still works taking place, with single-lane traffic at times. A one-way system remains in place on Leopardstown Road.
Roadworks are in place in connection with the Balbriggan bypass on the N1 at the Five Roads, about five miles south of Balbriggan. At night, work will take place on Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Memorial Bridge, Stephen's Street Lower, Camden Street, Charlemont Street and the north and south quays.
In Cork, AA Roadwatch says the Carrigtoohill to Carrigane Road, north of the entrance to Castleview, will be closed for pipelaying. Maylor Street and Caroline Street will remain closed until the end of September. There are also roadworks on the Wilton Road.
In Co Donegal, extensive works are taking place on Main Street, Ballybofey. In Co Meath, roadworks on the N3, two miles on the Dublin side of Dunshaughlin, will cause considerable delays.
Roadworks are in place on the Clane road on the Sallins side of Clane village in Co Kildare. There will be single-lane traffic on the eastbound carriageway of the Athlone by-pass for the next six months. In Waterford, South Parade will be closed until near the end of next month for roadworks.
