The west coast's "ocean world" is the subject of a five-part documentary series which begins on Teilifis na Gaeilge (TnaG) tomorrow night. Entitled Duchas Mara, the series was made by the Martin Ryan Marine Science Institute at NUI, Galway, with An Fhiontarlann, a film production company based at the university's Irish language centre at Carraroe, Connemara. It aims to give the viewer an insight into our marine heritage, teeming with marine mammals, fish, shellfish and sea vegetables. Themes explored in the series include seaweed, lobsters, underwater Connemara and marine research. The first part, on Connemara shores, moves from man-made piers to coral beaches and rocky inlets. The programmes will be first transmitted by T na G on Tuesdays at 9.30 p.m., and repeated with English sub-titles on Sundays.
