The 47-year-old man shot yesterday outside the White House after pulling out a firearm was recovering today after surgery, hospital officials said.

Mr Robert Pickett was in serious condition after surgery at George Washington University Hospital to remove a bullet from his right knee, the hospital statement said.

Hospital officials did not say when Mr Pickett would be released but noted surgery "of this type generally requires a hospital stay of several days".

At 11.36 a.m. (4.36 p.m. Irish time) yesterday Mr Pickett waved a handgun at the White House while President George W. Bush exercised inside. Pickett was subdued with a shot to his right knee by US Secret Service agents.

Mr Pickett, a former auditor for the Internal Revenue Service from Evansville, Indiana, expressed his desire for death in a letter published today in the Evansville Courier and Pressand Cincinnati Enquirernewspapers.

Authorities have said the incident may have been a suicide attempt.
