It is not every day you wake up and find you are a millionaire, but that's exactly what happened to a doctor in Bantry general hospital.
Dr Mutasim Mohamed (35), who is on study leave from the hospital, was told by AIB International Banking Services that he was the proud owner of €40 million (£31.5 million).
But the reluctant millionaire was having none of it - or at least trying not to. Despite his best efforts to hand back this windfall, AIB repeatedly sent him correspondence confirming his millionaire status. His last communication told him his fixed deposit account had earned him interest of £161,333.33 and the balance was now £40,161,333.33.
"I went to the AIB branch in Bantry and told them I did not own this money, but I received another letter saying I did," Dr Mohamed, who arrived in Ireland from Sudan last November, told The Irish Times.
"I got a solicitor to write them a letter telling them the same thing and yet today I receive another letter."
The doctor, who is preparing for his exams on May 24th, said: "Let them keep their millions and leave me alone to get on with my studying. It is causing me a lot of anxiety. I want them to stop sending these papers to me."
A spokesman for AIB said the bank was looking into the situation. He later said the doctor, who has been the reluctant owner of the wealth for a couple of months, was the victim of a technical error.
"The bank are looking into this and are rectifying it as we speak," the spokesman said. "There was an operational error, but it is a bit technical and I don't want to go into it."
