The wife of former taoiseach Jack Lynch has died aged 87.
Mairin Lynch married Mr Lynch in 1946. He died in October 1999. The Taoiseach sent a message of sympathy from the US, where he is attending the G8 summit.
"Máirin Lynch became a very well known public figure as she accompanied Jack on his official duties at home and abroad," Mr Ahern said.
"Máirin and Jack were inseparable. She was by his side throughout his public career and both of them were wonderful ambassadors for Ireland. Throughout her years in the public eye she became a respected and an admired figure.
"I know that her loss will be especially keenly felt among the people of the City of Cork for whom Máirin and Jack Lynch were held in very deep respect and affection.
"Now with Máirin's passing away she is united again with Jack."
