London - Lord Archer's wife, Mary, yesterday told the Old Bailey how she confronted her husband after she discovered he was having an affair.

During questioning by Mr David Waters QC, prosecuting at her novelist husband's perjury trial, she said she found out about his affair with his former personal assistant, Ms Andrina Colquhoun, in the 1980s by reading about it in a newspaper gossip column.

Lady Archer (56), called to give evidence on behalf of her husband of 35 years, was asked by Mr Waters if she was aware the affair had been in 1984-1985, carrying on in a diminished way until 1986-1987.

"You have heard more than I have heard," she replied.
