He said: "It's a real privilege to be here alongside so many people I've grown up admiring and still watch on the telly. "I've been sat there staring at Boris Becker, one of my heroes, for half the evening."

Last year's winner Paula Radcliffe finished third in the poll.

The England rugby squad was named team of the year for their World Cup victory and Six Nations grand slam. And team boss Clive Woodward won the coach of the year award, which was presented by England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Olympic rowing legend Sir Steven Redgrave won the Golden Sports Personality award after picking up more than half the votes cast. The trophy was created to mark the programme's 50th anniversary.

Wilkinson also presented the young personality of the year trophy to swimmer Kate Haywood. Five-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was named overseas personality defeating racing driver Michael Schumacher. Tennis star Martina Navratilova won the lifetime achievement award.
