About 250 homes in Stillorgan, south Dublin and Bray, Co Wicklow are without power after the winds brought down cables, according to the ESB.

Gusts of up to 80 mph are set to continue throughout today and tonight will be bitterly cold with wintry showers, according to Met Eireann. As winds moderate and frost sets in roads will become icy and dangerous.

Drivers, especially those of high-sided vehicles, are being warned to take extra care as strong cross winds are hampering driving on exposed roads and motorways.

The PSNI warned earlier that the Glenshane Pass and the Coleraine Mountain Road are extremely dangerous after heavy snowfall overnight.

The outlook for the week is for the weather to remain cold with further wintry showers, with possible pro-longed falls on hills.
