Around 60,000 bottles of wine were destroyed in a blaze that badly damaged a massive warehouse in Mullingar, Co Westmeath overnight.

The fire, which was discovered at around 9pm yesterday at the Wines Direct warehouse, was brought under control by three units of the fire brigade.

The company said this afternoon it had put a contingency plan in place and that full deliveries would resume by next Monday. It said some deliveries had gone ahead today.

Paddy Keogh, owner of Wines Direct, said his staff would not be losing their jobs over the fire.

"We employ 22 people and I want to assure them, as I was trying to do all last night, it's business as usual - or as near as usual from tomorrow," said Mr Keogh.

Thousands of wooden cases to protect the wines during shipping are believed to have added to the intensity of the fire, which took more than two hours to bring under control. There were no injuries.

It is understood that some 90 per cent of the business's stock is kept in bond in Dublin.

"It's hard to see more than 15 years of hard work and passion go up in flames. However, we just have to take this knock on the chin and ensure that business gets back to normal as soon as possible," Mr Keogh added.
