Mr John Berry, a father of three, from Athy, Co Kildare, died last September, aged 62. The former lorry-driver was one of only three victims to waive his anonymity and give evidence to the tribunal using his own name. He described, last May, how he contracted hepatitis C on his "first and only" treatment for haemophilia in 1979.
He was not diagnosed with the virus until 1991. Around the same time, he was also told he had liver cancer. Since then, he told the tribunal, he had felt he was "on death row . . . I have no future. My future, my family's future is gone."
Asked what he hoped the tribunal would achieve, he replied: "I went in with a nosebleed and I came out with hep C. Now, I'd like to know, there must be someone responsible for that."
