As one of the 27 people hurt in the yesterday's series of crashes on the M7 and M9 died, officers from the Carlow/Kildare Garda Division said they had set up an Incident Room to investigate what happened.

Gardai named the victim as Kate Moyles (24) of Lumville, The Curragh, Co Kildare. She crashed into the back of a fire engine which was travelling to the scene of another accident yesterday morning.

Yesterday's series of pile-ups began just before 9am when a lorry crashed into the back of a car transporter, causing a series of accidents over five kilometres on two stretches of motorway between Kildare and Naas.

The Health Service Executive immediately ordered the implementation of a major emergency plan to cope with the incident. Some 27 people were treated at Naas General Hospital. Four other people injured in yesterday's M7 pile-up remained in hospital today.

Gardaí warned drivers this morning that care was still needed on the N3 at Navan and that fog lights should be used in areas where visibility was poor.

Two lorries and three cars were involved in a crash near Navan this morning. Several people were hurt but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, provisional statistics issued by gardai today indicate that during the seven day period from the 19th March- 25th March 2007 inclusive, a total of four hundred and forty-four drink driving incidents were recorded, compared to 487 the previous week.
