THE Dublin woman who was killed instantly in a head-on collision in Co Cork yesterday has been named as Ms Karen Jones (31), with an address at Pembroke Road in Dublin.
Four other people were injured in the accident which happened between Fermoy and Mitchelstown in north Co Cork.
Gardai reported that 40 people were killed in traffic accidents during August.
The main Cork-Dublin road was sealed off for some time as fire brigade units cut the dead woman from the sports car which she was driving and attended to the other victims.
The accident occurred before 9 a.m., and the injured people were taken to Cork University Hospital where they were said to be comfortable.
Fermoy gardai have asked for witnesses to the crash to contact them.
The provisional statistics issued by gardai yesterday show fatalities at roughly similar levels to last year.
The number of people killed in the first eight months of 1998 was 288, compared with 297 during the same period in 1997.
The number of people injured in the period was 6,672, compared with 6,920 in 1997.
The figure of 40 fatalities in August compares with 37 during August 1997.
There were 859 people injured in August 1998, compared with 958 during the same period in 1997.
