The 50-year-old German woman was cycling on the Bandon Road near Bishopstown when the accident happened at around 5pm

The woman was cycling on the inward lane of the dual carriage way when she was hit by a car going in the same direction.

The woman, who has been in Ireland since January and was living in Bishopstown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was later removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will carried out later today.

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was not injured.

Gardaí immediately cordoned off the road to allow a forensic crash investigator examine the scene of the accident.

The death of the German woman is the third fatality on Cork roads this year and the first in the Cork City Garda Division.
