Vienna - A Lutheran bishop yesterday became the second woman to announce she would stand in Austria's presidential election in April.

Superintendent Gertraud Knoll (39), the first woman superintendent - the equivalent of a Catholic bishop - in the province of Burgenland, said she would run as an independent candidate.

If elected, she would be the first Protestant president of t he mainly Catholic country of eight million people. She would also be the first woman in the country's highest office.
