A 34-year-old woman has died at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda after giving birth to twins by caesarean section, it has been confirmed.

The Health Service Executive said in a statement that the woman died early this morning.

"The woman had given birth to twins by caesarean section yesterday evening. One of her babies died soon after birth and the other baby is in a critical condition," the statement said.

"The HSE would like to offer its deepest sympathy to the family on their tragic loss and hope that the family will be given the privacy and space that they need, to deal with their grief. The hospital will give the family every assistance and support required.

"As is normal practice a full review of the circumstances surrounding the deaths will be carried out and the coroner has been notified."

The woman was a serving member of An Garda Síochána.

In a statement, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors said it wished to extend "heartfelt sympathy to the husband and family" of the woman, who was a member of the union.

"Every member of the association and indeed of the entire Garda Síochána has been shocked and traumatised by this extremely sad event and our hearts go out to her husband and family. Our thoughts are with them in their time of terrible tragedy," said association general secretary Joe Dirwan.
