Gardaí in Dublin are still trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery on Friday evening of an unconscious woman on a path popular with walkers in Donnybrook.

The woman, who lives close to where she was found beside Herbert Park, remained in a critical condition in hospital last night.

Supt Kieran Kenny, of Donnybrook Garda station, said no information had emerged which could prove or rule out foul play. "We have had a lot of calls and there are people who were in the area at the time who we still have to rule out, but these may have been just passing through at the time."

It has not been determined if the victim was attacked or may have fallen or fainted. The woman, who lives locally and is in her 30s, was found lying face down by passers-by just before 7.30pm. She had a single serious head wound and there were no obvious signs that she had been sexually assaulted. A number of items she had at the time were found at the scene.

The lane is used as an exercise route or as a short cut between Donnybrook village and Ballsbridge. The woman was out walking at the time.
