Customs officers have arrested a woman following attempting to smuggle over 17,000 cigarettes into the country last night.

Customs officers have arrested a woman following attempting to smuggle over 17,000 cigarettes into the country last night.

Sandra Piruska (46), a Latvian national, arrived on a flight from Riga when officers discovered 17,200 cigarettes in her baggage.

She was arrested and appeared in court this morning. She was remanded in custody, to appear again next Friday.

This year to date customs officers have seized 12.3 million cigarettes at Dublin airport valued at €3.4 million, and 392 kilograms of tobacco valued at €104,500.
