The elderly woman struck by a Garda car in Clonskeagh, Dublin, on Sunday afternoon was in a "critical but stable" state at Beaumont Hospital, yesterday.
Gardaí at Donnybrook Garda station have opened an investigation into the incident, a Garda spokesman said. "Once an investigation is under way, there is very little we can say until it is concluded," he said.
The spokesman said it was not known how long the investigation would take, but said such investigations were generally concluded within a fortnight or so.
It is still unclear if the two female gardaí in the car were responding to an emergency call at the time. Witnesses reported hearing a siren at around 4pm when the incident happened.
The woman in her 70s was either crossing the road or at the bus stop when the patrol car approached the sweeping bend at Vergemount, outside Clonskeagh Hospital.
It appears that the car lost control and crashed into the bus shelter.
The injured woman was found lying on the footpath. She was first taken to St Vincent's Hospital but was later moved to Beaumont Hospital. The two gardaí in the car were treated for shock.
A team from the Garda's accident investigation unit visited the scene before the badly damaged Garda car was removed for a technical examination.
The bus stop was destroyed and the area was cordoned off for several hours.
