A woman was being treated in hospital today for leg and head injuries after she was knocked down by a vehicle while passers-by tried to put out a fire at a school near Omagh, Co Tyrone.

Passers-by stopped at Dean Brian Maguire High School in Carrickmoor after two wheelie bins were set alight between 4am and 5am.

The blaze spread to the school canteen which sustained scorch damage but two passers-by managed to put the fire out.

A number of other people also stopped to help and during the operation, the woman was hit by a vehicle.

Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Police said a number of youths were seen leaving the area around the school shortly after the fire started.

They thanked locals for their efforts to prevent the fire spreading but also appealed to witnesses, particularly the driver of a minibus, to come forward and help them find out who was responsible.
