A woman in her 20s was killed yesterday in a three-car collision on a stretch of road in Co Wicklow where others have been killed and injured in the past.
As well as the woman who died, two men were injured in yesterday's crash on the busy N11 at Clonpadden, north of Arklow town.
Last August, Shane Rickerby (19), from Tombreane, Carnew, Co Wicklow, died on the same stretch of road following a three-vehicle crash in which the car he was driving collided with another vehicle.
Yesterday, the car driven by the woman who died and another crashed vehicle lay only metres away from a roadside memorial to Mr Rickerby.
Local GP and county councillor William O'Connell said last night that, in his capacity as a GP, he had attended over 25 fatal crashes on this stretch of road in the last 30 years.
Scratnagh crossroads, where yesterday's collision occurred, has been the subject of attention by Wicklow County Council in recent years with road markings and high-powered lights being put in place.
Cllr O'Connell said the road was wide but had sweeping bends and drivers were sometimes inclined to try and overtake cars. "It's a notorious stretch of road and has claimed a lot of lives," he added.
There is additional traffic on this stretch of the N11 as work on the Arklow bypass continues. Two men involved in yesterday's collision were taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries.
Yesterday's fatality brings to 86 the number of deaths on Irish roads this year.
