A 24-year-old woman is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff's Court this morning charged with murder following the discovery of a child's remains at a house in the Govan area of the city.
Police investigations were continuing into the deaths of two other children, one of them believed to be an infant, although this was not confirmed, after the discovery of skeletal remains under a cupboard and floorboards in the house in Summertown Road.
Detectives made the discovery after being called to the house at around 6.15 p.m. on Wednesday and said only that a woman had been arrested and detained in custody in relation to the death of one child.
A spokeswoman for the Crown Office later confirmed: "A 24-year-old woman has been charged with murder in relation to the death of a child. Examinations are being conducted into the circumstances of the death of three children in total."
Neighbours watched as forensics experts carried a number of items, including a single bed mattress, from the property. However they said they were unsure who was in occupation of the flat, which some thought was rented-out.
One resident, Mr Robert Paton, who has lived in the area for 23 years, said he was "devastated" by the news. Another, who asked not to be named, said: "It is a rough area. I don't go out when it's dark. There are problems here, drugs and a lot of theft. But not this, this is not something anyone expects to happen in their street or even their city."
