A woman was remanded in custody today after she appeared in court charged with attempting to kill Labour MP Stephen Timms at his office in east London.

Roshonara Choudhary (21) is accused of stabbing Mr Timms (54), a former treasury minister, as he held a monthly meeting with constituents at a community centre on Friday.

He was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery on injuries. His condition is now stable.

Ms Choudhary appeared for a brief hearing at Stratford Magistrates' Court where she was charged with attempted murder and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon, police said.

She was remanded in custody until June 1.

Mr Timms was elected to parliament in 1994 after working in the telecommunications industry and serving on a local council.

He held several ministerial posts under Gordon Brown and his predecessor Tony Blair.
