The death of Ms Maureen Gleeson (35), Fatima Mansions, Dublin, was not in any way linked to the deaths of a number of other people last summer, allegedly from a batch of contaminated heroin, an inquest heard yesterday.

The family of Ms Gleeson told the Dublin City Coroner's Court they had been very upset by media reports last year that her death was connected with those of other people around the same time.

Ms Gleeson died from a combination of methadone or physeptone, alcohol, butane and diazepines in her system on May 16th last year, the inquest heard.

She had suffered a ruptured spleen and initially her death had been treated as suspicious, the coroner's court was told.

However, the Garda was satisfied there no third party involvement in her death.

She had been very ill for some time and had a serious drink problem.

She could not, however, inject heroin because her veins had all collapsed, family members said.

A post-mortem report found Ms Gleeson's spleen was enlarged by many times its normal size due to cirrhosis of the liver, which caused a build-up of blood in the organ.

The coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.
