The famous Parish in Limerick yesterday mourned Georgina O'Donnell, hit by a bullet meant for another woman in a nightclub last weekend. Two white lilies adorned her coffin and a framed photograph of the 20-year-old mother was placed on the altar during the funeral Mass in St Mary's Church. Other offerings included a set tray denoting the nature of her work at St John's Hospital.
To the strains of Hero and Be Not Afraid, the large congregation mourned along with Georgina's mother Vera, father Anthony, six sisters, Sandra, Tracey, Audrey, Breda, Pamela and Olivia, brothers Anthony and Jason, nine-month-old daughter Courtney, and boyfriend Andrew.
The principal celebrant, Father Tom Grealy, said everyone in the parish had suffered shock when it was announced that Georgina had met her death in the most tragic of circumstances.
He described her as "a happy girl who brought sunshine into the lives of her family and friends. For one so young, she had a deep sense of the equality of people of whatever race, colour or creed. This she derived from her religious sense that God made all of us equal."
The burial took place in Mount St Oliver Cemetery.
Gardai are still hunting her killer, believed to be a 29-year-old man.
