A woman who was shot in the face at a night club in Limerick city on Saturday morning has died from her injuries. Her death brings to four the number of people who died in separate violent incidents during the Bank Holiday weekend.
A full-scale murder hunt was under way in Limerick last night after Ms Georgina O'Donnell (21), of St Brigid's Avenue, St Mary's Park, died in hospital.
One line of inquiry being investigated by gardai is that the gunman had intended to shoot at another woman who was with the victim and that Ms O'Donnell had tried to protect her companion.
In a further incident in Limerick, the body of a man in his late 20s was taken from the River Shannon early this morning. It is believed his drowning followed an incident with another man near the Treaty Stone around 10.45 p.m.. According to a Garda spokesman, the body of the man, a native of Limerick, was spotted in the water near Thomond Bridge around 1.40 a.m. Gardai were interviewing a number of witnesses and had earlier questioned a man in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, a man was charged with murder last night following the stabbing of a young man at Firhouse, Tallaght, late on Saturday. Mr Stephen Morris (17) of Killakee Walk was stabbed near his home at about 10.25 p.m. and died from his injuries. Mr Vincent Flynn (18), Kiltipper Close, Tallaght, appeared at Chancery Lane District Court. He was remanded in custody and will appear in court on Wednesday.
Gardai in Clondalkin are investigating the fatal stabbing of a security guard at George Cooke's wholesalers in Camac Park, Bluebell industrial estate, at 1.15 a.m. on Saturday.
Quantities of cigarettes and alcohol were stored at the premises.
The dead man has been identified as Mr Hans Herman Clausen (44), a German national, who was living in the Coolock area.
It is understood he was on duty alone and was stabbed after being confronted by a number of men.
