Gardaí are to send a file to the DPP after questioning a woman who triggered an emergency when she attempted to open a door on board an aircraft flying from Heathrow to Cork.

The woman - who is in her late 40s - caused panic among 152 passengers on board Aer Lingus Flight EI727 from Heathrow on Sunday night when she began to tamper with the door on the Airbus 321 about 10 minutes before it came into Cork Airport at 11 p.m. on Sunday.

She tried to open the door before she was restrained by other passengers and cabin crew.

The pilot then alerted security at Cork Airport and the woman was handed over to gardaí.

According to an informed source, the woman appeared to be suffering from a medical condition. A file will now be prepared on the matter for the DPP who may decide to bring charges.

Group pays €25m for Limerick hotel

A consortium of Limerick business people has paid over €25 million for the Castletroy Park Hotel on the outskirts of the city.

The property, originally built in 1991 and owned by American entrepreneur Mr Chuck Feeney, had been put up for sale by tender.

Limerick accountant and financial adviser Mr Michael Daly, who heads the consortium, confirmed they were the purchasers.

"We will carry out a review over the next few months before making a decision on the hotel's future," said Mr Daly.

Kilkenny brewery copes with spill

A disinfectant spillage at St Francis Abbey Brewery, Parliament Street, Kilkenny yesterday was contained within the plant.

A spokesman for Diageo said the liquid leaked from a holding tank at the brewery and was discovered at 4 a.m.

Immediate action was taken and the emergency services were called as a precaution. The Environmental Protection Agency was also alerted.

3m cigarettes seized at Rosslare

Customs officers at Rosslare yesterday seized 3.29 million cigarettes valued at over €1 million with a potential duty in excess of €€791,000.

An articulated truck and refrigerated container valued at €€70,000 have also been seized.

A 41-year-old Armagh man appeared before Judge Ó Buachalla charged under Section 119 of the Finance Act 2001 and Section 10A of the Finance Act 1997.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Enniscorthy District Court on Wednesday, June 23rd.

The load had arrived by ferry from Cherbourg and had been concealed behind empty fish boxes in the container.

Knock-Liverpool air service opens

Regional airline Aer Arann yesterday started a new service from Knock Airport to Liverpool Airport. The new service will operate Monday to Friday leaving Knock Airport at 8 a.m. The return flight will leave John Lennon Airport in Liverpool at 8.35 p.m.

Fares on the route will start from €39.99 one way, including tax, and the flight will be operated by a 48-seater ATR42 aircraft.
