The West Cork Chamber Music Festival, which runs for eight days from tomorrow in Bantry, has created another rich and fascinating programme.
Soprano Patricia Rozario will be there, giving the premiere of John Tavener's The World (text by Kathleen Raine) with the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet. The Arditti Quartet add significantly to the contemporary flavour.
The period-instruments Quatuor Mosaiques and forte-pianist Patrick Cohen will set down new markers in earlier music. The French wind octet, Octuor Paris- Bastille will form the core of the ensemble to play Mozart's great Serenade for 13 wind instruments, and a cello octet has been brought together for Villa- Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 (with Patricia Rozario, again). Joanna MacGregor returns to give a late-night performance of John Cage's delightful Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano. And, if you don't know what a prepared piano is, there's a talk and a public "preparation" in advance for you to find out. Not to be missed.
