Police investigating the murder of Bristol landscape architect Joanna Yeates have been given another 12 hours to question a man arrested yesterday in connection with her death.

The man, identified by local media as her 65-year-old landlord, lived in the same building as Ms Yeates, who went missing from her flat in Canynge Road in the Clifton area of Bristol on December 17th after buying a pizza and two bottles of cider on her way home from a city pub.

Her boyfriend reported her disappearance on December 19th, after returning home following a weekend away.

Her body was found covered in snow by the side of a country lane about 3km from her home on Christmas Day, 11 days after she disappeared. She had been strangled.

Police said the extension in the man's period of detention was granted by a senior officer. Detectives can hold him until this evening when they will either have to charge him or apply to a magistrate for more time to question him.
