Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny today claimed that a Yes vote in the forthcoming Lisbon Treaty referendum is "absolutely essential" for the continued success of the Irish economy.
Speaking at a briefing in Dublin, Mr Kenny said that there will be consequences if Ireland rejects the treaty. He said the country would be sending a signal about its commitment to a European process that has benefited Ireland.
"Some people claim that there will be no consequences if Ireland rejects this treaty – that we can simply go back and negotiate a better deal. This is irresponsible and wrong. There are consequences if we choose to
detach ourselves from our European partners," said Mr Kenny.
"We are a respected and influential member of the European Union. In this referendum we, uniquely, have the opportunity to reaffirm our place at the heart of Europe.
"If we vote no that reputation will be tarnished and the message that will go out to international investors is that Ireland has isolated itself from the rest of Europe. This will do nothing to help attract new investment and new jobs at a time when we need to safeguard and protect our prosperity," he added.
Mr Kenny urged voted to reflect on the role of Europe in Ireland's economic success during the run up to Thursday's referendum.
"I believe that most people recognise that the dynamic and efficient Europe that the Lisbon Treaty will create will be a catalyst for Ireland's future economic success and that on June 12th Ireland will opt for solidarity and influence, rather than isolation," he said.
