A BENCH warrant has been issued for the arrest of a 16-year-old boy who has been charged with threatening to douse his mother with petrol and set her on fire.

The boy, who is from Dublin city's south side, was arrested on November 30th, the Dublin Children's Court had heard.

On December 1st last, he had been remanded on conditional bail by the court to appear again yesterday.

The boy is charged with making a threat to his mother that he would kick in the door of her home, hold her down, cut her hair, pour petrol over her and set her alight. The charge also stated he allegedly threatened his mother's family and that he would set her house on fire. He is also facing a second charge for criminally damaging her car.

An order had also been made that a responsible adult would have to accompany the boy to his case. He was also warned he must not "threaten or put in fear any member of his family", otherwise he would be remanded in custody.

Defence solicitor Michelle Finan told Judge David Anderson yesterday that the boy's mother was present; however, her son had not come to court because he "had an inordinate fear about coming here".

The judge then issued a bench warrant for the teenager's arrest.
