A juvenile has been arrested over the attack on the driver of a Dublin Bus that forced the company to curtail services in Rathfarnham.

The youth was questioned on suspicion of assault and released at 1pm, a spokeswoman in the Garda Press Office said. She said the age or gender of the suspect would not be released.

The 15B bus driver, a Romanian national, was attacked by a group of youths in the Whitechurch area after he parked his bus on Monday night. They sprayed him in the face with a fire extinguisher forcing him to be hospitalised for a short period.

In the aftermath of the attack yesterday, the National Bus and Rail Union decided to cut the route by 1.5km after 6pm.

NBRU spokesman John McGraine said the curtailment of services would continue until further notice.

"We need some sort of protection up there. We have no guarantee from management, no guarantee from gardai at the moment," he told ireland.com today.

He said the driver in question had inhaled some of the contents of the fire extinguisher, had burns to his eyes and was still unable to eat.

Mr McGraine called for the setting up of a forum comprising his members, gardai, local residents and politicians in an effort to solve the problem of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Fine Gael TD Alan Shatter welcomed the news of arrests for the "outrageous and unprovoked attack".
