A Ballyfermot youth had to be rescued from a stolen car when it overturned and landed on its roof during a car chase. The 16-year-old pleaded guilty in Kilmainham District Court to driving a stolen car and to dangerous driving at Cherry Orchard on January 16th.
The youth was driving an Opel Vectra when a Garda car pulled up beside him. He took off at speed and had some near misses with other traffic. He overturned the car as he tried to mount a bank at Cherry Orchard Grove. The car landed on its roof and Garda Gerard Cleary had to break a window to rescue the youth.
Judge Gillian Hussey remembered that a member of the youth's family had already died in a stolen car. "It obviously didn't teach you a lesson. If you don't place any value on your life, why should I? But I do value the lives of the many people who could have been killed that night."
Greg Mullen (17), of Croftwood Park, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to being a passenger in the stolen car.
Solicitor Mr Terence Hanahoe said the pair had not stolen the car themselves and had paid for it. They knew the deal was suspect.
Judge Hussey remanded both in custody to March 24th for probation reports.
