Mexico's Zapatista leader, Subcomandante Marcos, asked today to be allowed to address the European Parliament, should he be refused permission to speak before the Mexican Congress.
"If the Mexican parliament does not want to hear us, maybe the European parliament will," Mr Marcos said today.
His remarks came after talking to Sami Nair, a French deputy of the European parliament.
Mr Marcos had earlier turned down a suggestion he meet with a joint congressional commission, insisting he wanted to address the full Congress, which was to start its regular session today.
Subcommandante Marcos, together with another 24 commanders of the Zapatista National Liberation Army arrived in Mexico City on Sunday after a two-week march to promote an indigenous rights bill before Congress.
