A report headed "File for DPP on alleged importation of cow with BSE" in yesterday's editions said "there are nearly 1,700 infected animals" in Northern Ireland. We are advised by the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland that there has been a total of 1,745 cases of animals with BSE in Northern Ireland since 1989, every one of which was destroyed as soon as the disease was diagnosed. Last year there were 82 cases. In January 1997 there were seven cases.
