A chara, - Our new city manager thinks that the "silent majority" in Galway is in favour of the proposed Galway city outer bypass including a new bridge at Menlo (Out Of The West, March 12th).
As Mr John Tierney has just returned to Galway he can perhaps be forgiven for failing to realise that the majority of Galwegians are no longer silent but have thankfully found our voices and are speaking loud and clear through the various groups which represent us, such as Hands Across The Corrib, Galway for a Safe Environment. Galway Environmental Alliance and An Taisce.
These groups continually voice their objections to damaging proposals such as the bypass and incineration. The problem is that most of our local and national elected representatives have not learned to listen. They still think that they alone know what is best for Galway.
Welcome to Galway, Mr Tierney. As you have just taken up the position of our City Manager you have a wonderful opportunity to make a fresh start by entering into real consultation and dialogue with Galwegians so that together we can prevent the destruction of our beloved city. - Yours, etc.,
Anne Carthy, Killeen, Bushypark, Galway.
