Sir, - Mr Hugo Duffy's letter (December 11th) contained numerous inaccuracies and incorrect assumptions. I can understand and sympathise with Mr Duffy as he is one of many victims of a campaign of misinformation in the Clontarf area.
I would like to clarify the following points:
Dublin Port has no plans to fill in hundred of acres in Dublin Bay. We have plans for the past 18 years to reclaim 52 acres. This is the only reclamation proposal which Dublin Port has. I agree with Mr Duffy that this is a modest proposal.
The area in question is at the eastern extremity of the existing port and not at Clontarf or Sandymount. The area is marked with orange flags which can be viewed from Clontarf.
We do not intend to sell off this land to developers. It is needed to cater for larger ships which require deeper water and will be used by us for this purpose.
We do have title to this land and have had for around 100 years.
I hope this clarifies these issues for Mr Duffy and indeed for anyone who might be a victim of misinformation. - Yours, etc.,
Jimmy Carolan, Dublin Port Company, Alexandra Road, Dublin 1.
