Sir, - Fintan O'Toole's article about Dana running for President was only a facade used to attack Catholics and the Catholic Church.
He asserted, early in his article, that a large section of Catholics here were pushing for Dana to become President. Where did Mr O'Toole get that vital piece of information? I certainly do not wish Dana to become President and not one of my large circle of Catholic friends and relations wish for it either.
He proceeds to make snide and smart remarks about the type of Ireland that Catholics dream of, and concludes that these dreamers are "sinking fast". He goes on, ad nauseam, with references to Knocknagow, Irish modernity, the Pope's youth Mass, hardline orthodoxy, etc, etc, all with the same objective: to denigrate the Catholic Church.
Please, Mr O'Toole, you can and do write readable and responsible material but this type of drivel ill becomes one with your journalistic skills and experiences. I look forward to something more solid from you next time round. - Yours, etc.,
Tom O'Neill,
Villa Park Gardens, Dublin 7.
