Solar panels and schools

A bright idea

Sir, – As a former primary school teacher and a recently retired member of Kerry County Council, I was particularly interested in the letter from Paul Gallagher (May 26th).

A number of years ago I proposed precisely that course of action, asking that a national plan would be put in place regarding the provision of solar panels on the roofs of schools, community centres and sports club halls.

The national grid would most certainly benefit and so would the bodies charged with managing those vital community facilities.

My proposal on being unanimously agreed by the council was forwarded to the relevant statutory body and is most likely still lying unanswered on some dusty shelf.

As a perennial optimist in these matters, I frequently also proposed that water harvesting would be standard practice in all large public buildings and very especially in those in the process of being built or adapted.

I live in hope that the urgent reality of the environmental challenge will finally elicit positive action from those who thus far seem to not really care. – Is mise,
