Sir, – Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe says that Russia switching off the supply of natural gas presents a severe risk to Ireland. When severe risks are identified it is good practice to speedily introduce appropriate measures to eliminate or reduce them to an acceptable level, if possible.
In Ireland we have an abundant quantity of natural gas in the Corrib gas field to substantially eliminate any shortfall that might occur for the next few years. If the Government has identified the risk, would it not be prudent to intervene to ensure a substantial immediate increase in the output of the gas to Ireland and build appropriate extra storage facilities for the gas, in case of future possible worldwide shortages? – Yours, etc,
