Sir, – Frank McNally (An Irishman’s Diary, October 6th) describes comparative research in the US on the rough and the smooth pronunciation of the letter “r” in words with a conclusion that r-rolling might be associated with virtue, it being honest and sincere.
Whether it is the English person visiting Ireland (Island) who sits into their ca(r) or myself from the west of Oirrland asking the satnav for directions to Ballinderreen, luckily computer algorithms have no difficulty in understanding and responding intelligently, irrespective of which one of us might be the less virtuous. – Yours, etc,
